We had a really special evening Gallery Particulier with a reading by Nico Fox, on Thu March 19, The pieces she shared landed. You could hear it in the room: people reacting, laughing in places, going quiet in others, really following along.
We were celebrating the launch of her latest book, At Least The Ocean Will Stay. It gathers personal, poetic texts about her experience of love, loss, absurdity, and survival in a quietly unraveling world. Moving between intimacy, grief, and humor, it reflects on relationships, bodies, cities, and the small rituals that make going on possible: the Ocean helps! It can be purchased here.
It also meant a lot to see so many people show up for Nico. Friends, peers, new faces. People came with intention, and you could feel that. It wasn’t just a reading, it felt like people marking something with her.
The audience was part of what made it. Everyone brought their own energy, and it created an ebullient melting pot. There was something special about the mix. People who are clearly doing their own thing, building their own paths, figuring things out in their own way as New Yorkers do. They all had a special style, a special attitude. You could feel that sense of individuality and creativity in the room, and it made the whole night more alive.
A lot of people were visiting the gallery for the first time. They took time to ask about what we do and to spend time with the work on view: Elliot Johnson’s solo exhibition. His paintings held the room in a different way, and the mix of the two—his work and Nico’s writing—had a great ring to it.
It was simple: people showed up, paid attention to the words, to the art, got to know each other, and shared a space for a while. That’s definitely what we’re after!
