On October 16, Gallery Particulier hosted a remarkable evening of storytelling that strongly resonated with all who attended, led by Justin Freeman and MCed by the charming, versatile Comrade Cav.
The event, Because, Touch, invited participants to explore one of the most universal human experiences—touch. Through stories both poignant and humorous, attendees reflected on how touch, whether positive or negative, has shaped their lives, relationships, and personal journeys.
Some shared heartfelt accounts of touch as a source of healing, connection, and comfort, while others bravely recounted moments when touch had a more complex or painful impact. And, in the spirit of lightheartedness, there were even some unexpected and funny tales—like the one about monkeys offering tea!
This event was nicely framed by the vibrant exhibit, A Touch of Red, A Touch of Life, curated by our own Quiana Dumas. The art itself set the tone for reflection, making the evening all the more immersive and thought-provoking.
The second half of the evening brought a fresh twist, encouraging participants to engage with the artworks on a deeper level. Each person was invited to write a sentence capturing their personal experience or interpretation of a selected artwork, sparking meaningful conversations about the pieces. The best part? The audience voted on the most compelling descriptions, and the winners earned the opportunity to host the artworks in their own homes for several months. It was a beautiful way to encourage not just viewing, but active engagement with the art, fostering a deeper connection between the audience and the work.
The event was a resounding success—intimate, supportive, and full of warmth. It’s moments like these that highlight the power of storytelling and art to bring people together in meaningful ways. We are already looking forward to more evenings like this, where the stories we share become part of the larger canvas of our lives.
