We are delighted by the extensive turnout at the opening of Body and Self: An exhibit of Artworks by Sophia Gibbins. Not only was the gallery mobbed, but people stayed for an evening of vibrant, warm socializing. Our mission is to make visual arts more approachable, and make it plain fun.
Gallery Particulier exclusive artist Sophia Gibbins is 17 and she is storming the gates.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, of English and Brazilian origin, Gibbins paints figurative works—some of which are self portraits. Gibbins’s painting “Reach” was recently exhibited at the Met for achieving a Scholastic Gold Key Award, (additionally selected for two Silver Key Awards). Gibbins has already been accepted to her top choice for fashion program!
Gibbins’ artistic process is steeped in experimentation.
As a visual artist, fashion designer, painter, and multimedia artist, Gibbins faces weighty issues head on. She uses unconventional and recycled material to give her work figurative as well as literal texture. “Unconventional materials help me better tell my story by providing a richer canvas”, she says. In one of her life-scale works, Sophia addresses her own experiences with Crohn’s disease, which is particularly challenging for adolescents. Her work also tackles issues of bodily autonomy and women’s sexual health.
