We experienced so many meaningful, emotional moments during the Open Studios we can’t describe them all, but here are a few:
v Having friends visit and bring their support. Thank you! You know who you are!

v Hanging the banner outside the church, with the encouragement of St Lydia’s!

v Four gentlemen, and that includes an 8-year old boy, visited. The child likes to paint and draw. When asked whether any of the pieces particularly attracted him, he went straight for Phelonise Willie’s Waiting For Godot, a mostly abstract piece!

v A woman with disabilities spent an hour taking in the art, and chatting with us about our artists. A wonderful moment.

v Many people were fascinated by Ashley Alcime’s paintings. One woman pointed out “Sticks and Stones” – this is telling, isn’t it? she said. She clearly found in that art echoes of issues she has to address herself. A meaningful moment.
v A man with a different mind was stunned by A Shawn McKinney’s Cigar Ladies. Many people are!

“Thank you for having such a warm and welcoming space to enjoy art.”
“Grace Nkem’s piece is so wonderfully adorable and unsettling… I’m both terrified and intrigued.”
“Love the cigar ladies!”
“Ali Dachis, I love your piece. Beautiful coloration. Inspiring!”
“What a stunning collection.”
And many more.

We are grateful beyond words to Arts Gowanus for involving us, and to St Lydia’s for their exceptional warmth and hospitality – many visitors remarked on the warmth that is felt in the space.

Visitors, diverse, engaged, friendly, streamed through the exhibit. We felt that our mission to expand the reach of art, to connect artists with the community, was fostered over these two days. Thanks to our allies, and our supporters, and friends, and visitors.
