Reach, 6’x1′, Acrylic and Oil on Wood

A new artist concerned with body and self

We are thrilled to announce that a new painter/sculptor is joining our pool of outstanding artists. Her name is Sophia Gibbins, she’s 17 years old and has an astonishing set of skills and talent!

Some famous artists painted proficiently at 17: Guston, Picasso, Michelangelo, and many more.

But a painter needs to have more than great skills. They need to have something to express. Born and grown in Brooklyn, NY with a heritage half Brazilian and half English, Sophia Gibbins paints figurative works, some of which are self portraits, and is also a budding fashion designer.

The fiery young painter addresses issues of social equality young women face like identity, lack of bodily autonomy, the social pressure on girl’s looks and societal obsession with physical appearances. Her work is always monumental, and frequently adopts an empathetic gaze. Additionally, she documents her own challenges, including her struggle with Crohn’s disease, which is particularly challenging for adolescents.

About to graduate from the demanding art program at E R Murrow High School, with major art schools vying to have her in their programs. Sophias’s piece, “Reach”  is showing at the Met Museum because she achieved a Scholastic Gold Award.

Stay tuned for her solo show opening March 29 at Gallery Particulier!
