Recently, we visited a women’s shelter for mothers and young children, bringing music and art into the space. Killer Queen Opera soprano Christina Swanson as well as Caroline and Sasha filled the room with opera, excerpts from beloved musicals, pop songs, and a lively sing-along.
The women’s shelter houses mothers of young children and babies. And the young ones seemed to enjoy the music just as much as their mothers as they listened, clapped, laughed, and joined the celebration in their own ways.
The performances were intimate and welcoming, and brought all of us together in the enjoyment of the music.
To conclude the visit, we held a raffle of artworks by artists from Gallery Particulier. Our regular MC Cav (Comrade Cav, The Voice Of Brooklyn!) The women who won selected works they connected with personally, and each artwork will live in their rooms for the next six months. For some, it may be the first original artwork they have ever hosted in their personal space.
This is at the heart of our mission: sharing art in innovative ways and creating experiences that are joyful, inclusive, and human. Art should not only exist inside institutions, but travel into the places where people live their lives, bringing beauty, meaning, signs of identity along with it.
We are deeply grateful to everyone at the shelter for including us, and to Christina, Caroline, Sasha and Cav for their generous participation.
And we are particularly, and always, grateful to our artists for sharing their art with our NYC communities!
