What a night! These are some of the compelling stories we heard at Gallery Particulier’s ‘Because, Summer – The Storytelling Speakeasy.’ There was a tale of being locked up in a hearse that got a lot of laughs, and another with a very different tone about picking cans in the trash with a father, which turned into a heartwarming life lesson. We listened to a babysitter for the ultra-rich navigate the world of luxury while dealing with grief, and even heard about a whirlwind ‘married’ relationship with a man that lasted just a few hours. Each story was unique, captivating, and full of summer vibes.
Curator Richard Burroughs (left above) from So Boom, Check It wowed us with his theatrical storytelling, delivering his tale with so much panache it felt like a mini-performance.
And MC Comrade Cav, the voice of Brooklyn (right above), shared a story of love at first sight that was a lot of fun. His other tale described the process behind one of the most iconic images of the Black Lives Matter movement, a great touch of social awareness.
The evening was made ever more special by gutsy singer Stacy Ricker, who belted out the blues and set the perfect mood for the event.
And, of course, we had the much-anticipated raffle draw. In the fun, convivial atmosphere, we watched the art ‘fly off the walls’ as winners were announced. These lucky folks will get to host beautiful artworks in their homes for several months, with no strings attached. It is the Gallery Particulier way of bringing art into people’s lives.
As we mingled and shared laughs, it was clear that some very cool people were in attendance. Handles were exchanged, new friendships were formed, and the free cocktails courtesy of Little Mo Wine certainly didn’t hurt. The delicious bites, including salmon quiche, taleggio and artichoke quiche, and Gallery Particulier’s signature spicy eggs, kept everyone in high spirits.
It was a night of art, stories, music, and community that we won’t soon forget.
Oh, and before we forget: we asked visitors to give us the secret code to be allowed in – well, it is a speakeasy. Here’s the list:
