Energy Exchange:
The Portraits

This exhibit brings together the remarkable portraits created during Energy Exchange: A Portraiture Night, a live painting event that celebrated the magic moment of artistic encounter between sitter and artist. Now, these portraits are on view—each one a snapshot of connection, observation, and interpretation.

The works are as diverse as their creators. Some come from gifted young students of curator and artist Emily Waters, whose talent and bold experimentation shine through. Others are by more seasoned voices in the portraiture tradition, such as Torild Stray, known for her expressive, intuitive style. Together, they form a multifaceted exploration of what it means to see and be seen.

The subjects, or sitters, were as central to the creative process as the artists themselves. They offered their presence, vulnerability, and individuality, giving each portrait a unique emotional resonance. Gone are the old notions of portraiture as power or permanence; what you see here is something more fleeting and human—a kind of mutual recognition.

Whether rendered in oil, pencil, pastel, or watercolor, these portraits are not just images. They are moments of exchange—of energy, perspective, and care.

Energy Exchange: The Portraits is both a tribute to the evening that sparked these works and a testament to the power of art to build connection. We are proud to share them with you.
